On January 1, 1995, Namyangju became a city covering a wide area by integrating Migeum and Namyangju both of which had shared a common life zone for the purpose of a balanced development between urban and rural regions. Namyangju has simplified its administration system and is carrying out a balanced development between urban and rural regions through increasing the effects of efficient local development and economic exchanges.
Namyangju is located in the northeastern area of Gyunggi Province, bordering on Pocheon-Gun in the north, Gapyeong-Gun in the northeast, Yangpyeong-Gun in the east, Hanam City and Gwangju-Gun in the south, Guri City and Seoul in the west, and Uijeongbu City in the northwest respectively. In latitude, the area located at the highest latitude of Namyangju City is Naebang-Ri, Sudong-Myeon at 37°46′11″ and that at the lowest latitude is the middle of Han River, in front of Mahyeon, Neungnae-Ri, Joan-Myeon at 37°30′32″.
In longitude, the west end is the top of Mt. Surak, Byeolnae-Myeon at 127°05′15″ and the east end is the middle of Bukhan River, Guam-Ri, Hwado-Eup at 127°22′52″. Therefore, Namyangju City covers 26km area from east to west and 30km from north to south in total. Then, Namyangju City Hall which is a center for the administration of the city is located at longitude 127°13′ east and at latitude 37°38′ north.
The area of Yangju-Gun which had belonged to Namyangju Region before it was separated covered 1020.34㎢, rendering Namyangju the most extended region with Gwangju-Gun in Gyunggi Province. However, in 1963 part of Yangju-Gun was integrated into Dobong-Gu, Nowon-Gu, and Jungrang-Gu of Seoul and then, in 1980, Namyangju-Gun became separated as well. Through this process, the areas of Yangju-Gun and of Namyangju-Gun became confined to 419.38㎢ and 495.63㎢ respectively and Namyangju itself became an autonomous administrative area.
From then on, Guri City became separated in 1986, Migeum City became separated in 1989, and then Migeum City re-integrated into Namyangju, which resulted in today's Namyangju City with the administrative units as today. Currently, Namyangju City is composed of several administrative districts as follows: 5 Eups (Wabu-Eup, Jinjeop-Eup, Hwado-Eup, Jingeon-Eup, Onam-Eup); 4 Myeons (Byeolnae-Myeon, Twegyewon-Myeon, Sudong-Myeon, Joan-Myeon); and 6 Dongs (Hopyeon-Dong, Pyeongnae-Dong, Geumgok-Dong, Yangjeong-Dong, Jigeum-Dong, Donong-Dong).Its total area covers 460.36㎢, 188.45㎢ of which is a limited development district and 48.26㎢ of which is a military facility protection zone.
